We know that our boats make incredibly unique party venues in London, but it's nice to hear others confirm this. We asked some of our favourite clients what makes them choose our boats over London club venues, and over other boats on the Thames. Below is what they said...
Marvin, We Love Occasions June 2024 Read Full Interview
This week we’re speaking with Marvin from 'We Love Occasions'
Favourite boat and why?
Favourite boat is the Golden Jubilee as it has great space, two levels and a large outside space perfect for the views.
What's the most popular request?
Our Photo Booth is a very popular option allowing guests to take memories away from the event.
What's your most memorable / funny experience onboard the boats?
Most memorable experience was a suprise 21st. The birthday girl had no idea she would be partying on a boat with all of her friends, which included balloon decor, a Photo Booth, LED numbers 21 and a LED Starlit Dance Floor. She was so happy and burst into tears of joy.
What do you like most about working with CPBS?
The staff are the best, super friendly since the moment we met them. Always look after us and are so easy to work with!
What's your favourite type of event and why?
Staff parties are our favourite as everyone lets their hair down and parties hard!
Which three words best describe working with CPBS?
Fun, friendly and reliable.

What do you like about Capital Pleasure Boats/our boats?
There are many things I like about CPBS, they totally understand my business & make me feel like I'm very much a part of their exciting team. The trust between us is immeasurable & the opportunities over the many years have been wonderful.
What's your favourite boat and why?
My favourite boat is the Golden Star, it's the smaller of the fleet but has the most intimate feeling & warmth about it.
What do you like most about working with CPBS?
The thing I like most about CPBS is the fabulous relationship that both myself & my staff have with the office & crew.
What’s your favourite type of function to cater for?
Difficult to pin point a favourite type of function as they all add up to people wanting to enjoy themselves, which is then a pleasure to serve.
What would you say is the most popular menu you provide?
Our most popular menus tend to be the BBQs throughout summer & our hot & cold finger buffets outside of that.
What’s your most memorable experience onboard the boats?
My most memorable experience has to be The Queen's Jubilee; proud to have had the opportunity to be part of it, and the excitement of watching the Flotilla which CPBS were a huge part of.
Have you had any special requests that were out of the ordinary?
Can't pinpoint any unusual requests, we try to make everything the norm, however special dietary requirements are becoming more and more frequent.
Which three words best describe working with CPBS?
Three words I'd use to describe CPBS: professional, organised, loyal.
Graeme, John Lewis September 2015 Read full interview
We asked Graeme about his boat parties on the Golden Sunrise and why he just keeps coming back...
How long have you been holding boat parties?
This year was our third annual boat party. The first was in 2013 and every year since then everyone has been really up for taking to the water again. The occasional lone call to organise something different is always shouted down pretty quickly!! The Boat Party is THE event in our branch’s social calendar!
What made you choose CPBS for your first party?
Your excellent web presence first drew us to you, and then we learned that you'd hosted parties for other branches of John Lewis to their complete satisfaction. Add to that your attractive food options and reasonable bar prices (always a winner) and it seemed like a real no-brainer to use you. In three years you’ve not disappointed and always delivered!
Why do you keep returning to the Thames?
We keep coming back because, quite simply, a boat party makes for a wonderful occasion. Seeing London from the river is an unbelievable experience, especially at night when the views are stunning. Landmarks you think you know, like Parliament, the Eye and the Tower, all look so different from the water, especially when lit up. Aside from the scenery the boat has the perfect vibe to create a great party atmosphere and by the end of the night the dance floor is always jumping.
Which of our boats is your favourite and why?
Without a doubt it’s the Golden Sunrise. It's just the right size for our numbers and has a great deck area from where you can watch the sights drift by. The crew are a friendly bunch who always give good, efficient service.
What has been your most memorable boat party moment over the years?
I think the phrase 'what goes on tour stays on tour' applies here!! Seriously though, there are too many to pick just one out. Nothing gets too over-the-top, we’re John Lewis after all, but that still leaves plenty of scope for drinking, dancing and banter! For me the mornings after are also memorable, seeing all the sore heads turn up for work wishing they’d drunk less and slept longer.
Is there anything you would change about CPBS or our boats?
In truth, not really! I can honestly say that what you provide hits the sweet spot every time and we’re already looking forward to next summer and our fourth cruise aboard the Golden Sunrise.

Chris, EXiT to the Thames May 2009 Read full interview
We spoke with Chris about his upcoming EXiT to the Thames function on board Golden Jubilee
Who are you and what do you do?
EXiT Night Promotions are led by two DJ Friends Chris and Gary, who promote House and Electro nights at various locations across London.
Is this the first time you have organised a boat party?
This is the second boat party we have put on. The first was on the Dixie Queen paddle steamer. We intend to put more on this year, with one at the end of the summer, and potentially one on Fireworks night.
Do you theme your events?
Generally our nights are always fun, with the theme based on Fire ExiT/Emergency Exit signage, therefore the decoration/inflatables are green and white. This one will be slightly different as we intend to have a beach theme aboard, with the emphasis on people dressing up as pirates, beach goers, and pretty much any kind of seafarers.
What is the music style for your events?
We play a range of House at our events, ranging from vocal and funky right through to Dirty and Electro.
What type of crowd do you usually attract?
Our crowds are made up of people who really want to release some energy at the weekend. Our motto is ‘EXiT the Week Enter the Weekend’. We want people to have the best weekend with us and forget the week of work. This is something we build our nights around, and as such we attract a fun and energetic crowd who are always extremely friendly and happy.
What attracted you to Capital Pleasure Boats / our boats?
The size of the boat is just right. Almost 250 people aboard a boat on a Saturday afternoon will be awesome. The sound system is spot on, so we know this boat will be just right for what people want out of a boat party. Let's not forget the massive sun deck for the hot June afternoon (fingers crossed).
What's your favourite sight along the river Thames?
Plenty of amazing sights to choose from. Sailing past and looking up at Canary Wharf has to be right up there. Also floating under Tower Bridge and waving at the tourists, whilst dressed as pirates should be a sight not to miss.
What are you looking forward to most about your planned event with CPBS?
The music, the people, and the nautical theme.
Are you planning an after party anywhere?
Yes we have an afterparty at a venue right near to where we disembark. In fact it's no more than a 5 minute walk away. We are keeping it hush hush until nearer the time. But the party will continue until the early hours.
If money / distance were no object what would be the ultimate venue for your events?
We have enjoyed a few parties down the Thames and think the unique sights make it such a good place, but I guess if we could then either floating round sunset strip in Ibiza, or imagine floating down the Amazon, that would be pretty amazing.
How do we buy tickets?
Tickets are on sale now, either from the DJs or through Ticketweb. Or check out our facebook event page.

Mostly antipodean, up for it, fun loving, no nonsense crowd.
What do you like about Capital Pleasure Boats / our boats?
Great boat, very friendly staff and well organised.
Which is your favorite boat and why?
It used to be the Golden Jubilee but nowadays we tend to go for the Golden Flame because of the better dj set up, better toilets and more space.
What's your favourite sight along the river Thames?

Capital Pleasure Boats speaks to Richie from FNUK about his upcoming event.
Who are you and what do you do?
We’re FNUK - ‘The Party People’ and we make / play / promote music and have been putting on parties for nearly 7 years.
How many times have you organised a boat party?
Our 7th Birthday onboard The Sundance this year is going to be our 22nd Boat Party.
Do you theme your events?
Yes, all of our boat parties have been themed.
What type of crowd do you usually attract?
We’re extremely biased but we believe our party goers are possibly one of the friendliest and up for it crowds in the world ever. A MASSIVE THANKS to all our loyal Fnukstars.
What do you like about Capital Pleasure Boats / our boats?
Everything is second to none right from the vessels to the staff onboard and in the office. A pleasure to work with.
Which is your favorite boat and why?
The Sundance is probably our favorite due to its layout and size.
What's your favorite sight along the river Thames?
The Thames Barrier always surprises us for its sheer size but going through Tower Bridge is always awesome. To be fairly honest though once we’re sailing everybody ends up dancing most of the night and don’t even notice the sights.
Are you planning any other boat parties this year?
Yes, we’re going to be doing at least another 2 this year.
Do you organise events other than boat parties?
Yes we’re involved in club nights and also festivals (you can catch us at Zoo8 which is being held at Port Lympne Zoo in Kent, 4th,5th and 6th July).
Which three words best describe your CPBS experience?
Professional, Competent and most of all Fun.
What do you enjoy most about the parties you hold on our boats?
As with most nights we do, it's the interaction we have with the crowd and seeing everybody having a wicked time, and all your vessels allow us to do that.
If money / distance were no object what would be the ultimate venue for your events?
A party on the Moon would be fun we reckon? Now that would really be a Moon Dance?
When is your next CPBS function?
22nd March The Fnuk Floaty Boaty Pirate Eggstravaganza (It's our 7th Birthday and it's on Easter Bank Holiday Weekend so we’ve got a feeling it's gonna slighty go off).
Tim the Tourman September 2007 Read full interview
Capital Pleasure Boats speaks to Tim The Tourman about his upcoming Halloween event
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Tim Oberg. I moved to London from Brisbane, Australia in January 2001 to do my two year stint as a Physical Education teacher. After 18 months of professional hell I decided to start a travel and events company called Tim The Tourman and six years later I am still in London going strong!
How many times have you organised a boat party?
I have organised two boat parties so far, in August 2006 and June 2007.
Do you theme your events?
Yes, the two boat parties I have organised so far have been titled ‘Toga On The Thames’. As the name suggests they have been toga parties with a dash of London sightseeing thrown in for good measure!
What type of crowd do you usually attract?
Most of my customers are young professional expats based in London. The nationality mix is probably 50% Australian, 20% New Zealand, 15% British, 10% South African and 5% other. My type of crowd is very consistent as my only means of promotion is word-of-mouth, and like-minded people attract like-minded people!
What do you like about Capital Pleasure Boats / our boats?
From day one CPBS have provided a very friendly yet professional service at a competitive price. Also, their location at Temple Pier is excellent.
Which is your favourite boat and why?
I have used two boats, Golden Jubilee and Golden Flame. Both have been excellent.
What's your favourite sight along the river Thames?
My favourite sights along the river Thames are probably the Houses of Parliament and Greenwich. Sailing through the Thames Barrier is also fun!
Are you planning any other boat parties this year?
Yes, on October 27 we are running the inaugural Halloween themed ‘Terror On the Thames’ party cruise.
Do you organise events other than boat parties?
Yes. The company organises: group tours to European festivals like the Oktoberfest and La Tomatina; long weekend party tours to such diverse places as Iceland and Scandinavia; and single day events such as 2006’s successful attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest pub crawl ever held (2,278 people).
Which three words best describe your CPBS experience?
Friendly. Professional. Easy.
What do you enjoy most about the parties you hold on our boats?
Our DJ on my first cruise was so good that I requested him for our second. Again, he was outstanding, and I look forward to having him again in October.
If money / distance were no object what would be the ultimate venue for your events?
Well, nothing beats being on the water, so I’d say it would be hard to beat partying on a yacht in Sydney Harbour!
When is your next CPBS function?
October 27, 6-10pm, ‘Terror On The Thames’ Halloween Party Cruise. We have pre-and post-drinks across the road at The Walkabout, Temple
John Brownlie, Begood Music June 2007 Read full interview
We speak to John about his upcoming function
Who are you and what do you do?
John Brownlie, Managing Director of BeGoodMusic and JohnCharlesMedia.
How did you get involved in the Ents industry?
Back at university, the weekend entertainment provision on campus was just a mindless diet of chart music being pedaled week in, week out. You could literally set your watch by what time a record came on at. So, in 1996, I taught myself to DJ, started buying house records and began running the Saturday nights to considerable success. I've worked in large scale events management since 1998 organising events up to 4,000 capacity and £200k budgets. Latterly, I now also work in film production, which I love.
How long have you been having boat parties?
I started BeGoodMusic in 2004 with my business partner and long term friend, Ryan Taylor. We had our first one off boat party in July 2005, to a fantastic response.
How many do you generally have per year?
We hosted three sell out events in 2006 and have another three this year, 2007.
Which of our boats do you use and why?
We originally used the Sundance, for its larger capacity, although this year, we're aboard the Golden Flame.
How much planning does it take to have a boat party?
The CPBS office handle the nuts and bolts of the bookings very quickly, so in terms of getting an event booked in, you can turn that around in two phone calls. Having said that, our events tend to be a little more complex than that. This year, we have associations with international companies for co-promotions, after party link ups with a major London venue, two film crews onboard including Ministry of Sound TV, live musicians, décor and photographers, all of which I've been working on for more than seven months. After all that, we're also the DJs on board, so there's lots to sort out with getting the music just right, especially as that's the main focus of our business. It's a 20 hour day. After the event ends, I'll edit somewhere in the region of 400 photographs before uploading our galleries to various websites and editing our own video footage. Once that's done, I start working on the next event (!)
Why do you like partying on the River Thames?
Wherever you travel in the world, it's hard to beat a summer's evening in London.
What is the music style of the parties?
For our boat parties, our style is funky, vocal house music. Good music "for your mind, body and soul"!
What type of crowd do you normally get?
We've had people from as far afield as Sheffield and Plymouth attend so it's a high profile night with wide appeal. We've been lucky to attract a great crowd of mainly young professionals who know their music and enjoy a good party!
Do you have an after party?
Yes, we've hosted after parties at The Cross and Pacha in the past. This year, we're delighted to be hosting all three of our after parties at that most legendary of British music establishments, The Ministry of Sound. We're hosting one of the rooms in Ministry and we're working alongside an all star cast of DJs this year including Joey Negro, Kenny Dope from Masters at Work, DJ Spen, Simon Dunmore, Steve Angello, Mark Knight, Joe T Vanelli and many more.
Apart from the Thames, what is your favourite place to party?
New York City. Although the terrace at Space Ibiza, Opium Garden on South Beach Miami and the Southport Weekender back in Blighty are all pretty high contenders for the title.
What is your favourite London spot?
Richmond Park.
What is your most memorable boat party experience?
I think most of them have been edited into our previous films! Probably playing one of our biggest tracks of the evening as we pass underneath the floodlit Tower Bridge. Seeing everyone out on deck, and on the bridge, waving at each other. It's "a moment "!
What are the details of your next party with Capital Pleasure Boats?
BeGood on the Thames – The London Boat Parties with Ministry of Sound – returns on Sat 23 June 2007, Sat 28 July 2007 and Sat 25 August 2007.
How do we purchase tickets?
Full details are on our website at www.begoodmusic.com or you can go direct to TicketWeb.
Nick Burrows, University of Greenwich Rugby Club February 2007 Read full interview
Nick Burrows, Social Secretary for the University of Greenwich Rugby Club takes some time out of his day to answer questions about the upcoming boat party on Valentine's day
Who are you and what do you do?
I am one of the Bar Managers for the University of Greenwich Students' Union but am also the Social Secretary for the University of Greenwich Men's Rugby Club.
How many times have you organised a boat party?
We have organised many over the years but since I have taken the post of Social Sec I have organised five.
What do you like about CPBS / our boats?
It's always a friendly service, easy to book and the crew are great on the night.
Which is your favorite boat and why?
We hosted three sell out events in 2006 and have another three this year, 2007.
Which is your favourite boat and why?
We have used both the Sundance and Golden Jubilee, but for me the Golden Jubilee is the best, purely due to the large open deck at the back.
What's your favorite sight along the river Thames?
The best sight for me is leaving Greenwich pier and looking back at our University. It means that I have organised everything ok, everyone is on the boat and I can finally go have a drink and relax!
Is your event a fundraiser, if so which charity is this for?
We actually use the money raised from the parties to help us go on tour at Easter. It covers the cost of tour shirts and other stash.
Are you planning any other boat parties this year?
Our boat party is next Wednesday, Valentine's day then that is it and it's time to start looking at Freshers' week next Sept / Oct.
Which three words best describe your Capital Pleasure Boats experience?
Ease, fun and drinking!
What do you enjoy most about the parties you hold on our boats?
It's the whole experience. The best ones are the Freshers' boat parties, to see the look on the Freshers' faces as we see the sights up the Thames, for a lot of them it's the first time in London.
Naz Sarker, charity event December 2006 Read full interview
Naz Sarkar chatted to us about his political work, his love of the Sundance and his upcoming charity boat party on the 9th December...
Who are you and what do you do?
My name’s Naz, and I am a Maths teacher in a secondary school, but I’m also a Labour councillor. I have been doing charity work for quite a while, and thought that a boat party was a good way to have fun and raise money at the same time.
Have you done much charity / voluntary work before?
I am running the London marathon for a different charity next year and I have done loads of voluntary work in the past, for charities such as homeless shelters. This is the first thing I’ve done for the “AMREF” (African Medical and Research Foundation), I’ve always thought it's important to support people with HIV & AIDS in the third world; and so I thought raising money for this cause is a brilliant thing to do.
So this is not your first fundraising event?
No, I have done quite a few things for the Labour Party (which may go down with some hisses and boos!) also for Crisis, KITC for kids, lots of events with the school, and a tsunami fundraiser. I have done nothing on this scale before though. Ideally, we are looking to raise about £5,000.
What made you decide on a boat party?
I had a party on one of your boats last year, for my birthday, and that was a great success, so for selfish reasons I thought another boat party would be a good way to get loads and loads of people together. It’s a good way of combining raising money with pleasure.
So what did you learn from your previous event with us?
I learnt a few things, firstly at the midway pier stop a lot of people got off, and I think it's really important to get the maximum numbers so you can raise the maximum money. I am looking to get the full 300 this time around – to make sure it’s a brilliant event, raise loads of money for charity, and ensure a busy fun atmosphere. I think it’s important to have a packed event which is really good.
What is it about the Sundance / CPBS that appealed to you?
I think it’s a brilliant boat and I got a brilliant level of customer service last year, people were always smiling and chatty when I was organising the event on the phone. The boat itself is great, three decks, the downstairs space is excellent for djing, and upstairs has a great atmosphere, plus people who want to go outside and enjoy the views can do. I think that London is the best city in the world, and looking at it from a boat by night is brilliant.
When selling tickets does the fact that the event is on a boat boost ticket sales?
I think it does as it’s different, and people love doing different things. This time around it will be a lot different to what we did last year, but people love different and I think it's great to be able to look at the Thames from a boat, the downside is people worry about being stuck once they are on, but for me that’s great as I have a captive audience.
What are you looking forward to most about the boat party?
I’m looking forward to the event in its entirety, I am making sure we have a great number of people there. I will be welcoming people onboard, doing a bit about the charity “AMREF”, also there will be someone from the charity there too, and we will have literature & displays on the boat. Later on in the evening my role is to make sure everyone has a brilliant time, liaise with the DJ and get everyone up and dancing.
The DJs are really good and have had a number one with a track called Dr Pressure, they are playing exclusively for this party, so anyone that comes will have a brilliant time, and experience a DJ phenomenon!!
What are the details of the event?
It's on the Sundance on Saturday the 9th December 2006, the boat will leave Embankment pier at 7pm and return there at 11pm.
Where can we buy tickets from?
Tickets can be purchased directly through me on 07980 281 834 or e-mail nazsarkar@yahoo.co.uk.
Tickets are £20.00 each with £10 to charity and the rest to cover the boat hire costs etc.

Who are you and what do you do?

How many do you generally have per year?
One a year so far but we’re looking at doing them more regularly depending on the success of this one.
Which of our boats do you use and why?
We’ve only used the Sundance so far because we like her size and the option of having two separate dance floor areas as well as the huge outside deck area. I’ve been on a couple of other parties on the Jubilee and so would also be interested in using her if we ever needed a slightly smaller boat.
Why do you like partying on the River Thames?
It’s just a different way to do it, you get to see the sights as well, it’s more exciting to go up and down the Thames than just be captured in a dark dingy club in Central London. It’s the best of both worlds, you get the outside space, you get the fresh air, but you can come in for a dance. It offers a bit more variety really.
What is the music style of the parties?
House and dance music. For our next boat party we’re flying in Alex Miles, a resident DJ from Bora Bora in Ibiza, so can guarantee the freshest summer tunes.
What type of crowd do you normally get?
Friendly sophisticated crowd, from mid 20’s to early 30's.
Apart from the Thames, what is your favourite place to party?
Festivals are obviously good because you get the outdoor space as well, so parks, and different clubs - Pacha and The Cross are probably my favourite.
What is your favourite London spot?
Covent Garden would be one of my favourite places in Central London, I love the whole market and busking, pubs and bars, restaurants and café culture, it’s brilliant.
What is your most memorable boat party experience?
That would definitely be the one we did last year on the Sundance, which was absolutely quality. We had a sell-out crowd, it was perfect weather, the DJs and everything went really well and everyone just loved it.
What are the details of your next party with Capital Pleasure Boats?
It’s the 27th August 2006 which is this Bank Holiday Sunday, on the Sundance. 7.30pm for an 8pm departure from Temple pier, returning at 1am. Afterwards there is an after-party at a secret London location which is walking distance from Temple pier.
How do we purchase tickets?
Tickets for the 27th August 2006 boat party are on sale until the day before the event from www.ticketweb.co.uk. Tickets are £20 for the boat party or £27 for the boat and after party.
